Udupi: Manipal rape accused Anand stable, Yogish critical - SP

Udupi, Jun 28: Superintendent of police (SP) Dr Boralingaiah on Friday June 28 said that Yogish, one of the three accused in the Manipal gang-rape case is in a critical condition while the other accused, Anand, is stable. Both were admitted to hospital after they attempted suicide in fear of arrest.
Addressing a press meet, the SP said that among the three, only Hariprasad, who is physically fit, was produced in court on Friday.
Hence, technically, only Hariprasad has been arrested while the other two are under tight security, he said. They will be officially arrested once they recuperate and are discharged from hospital.
Narrating the sequence of events that led to their arrest as explained by the IGP on Thursday, the SP said that Anand had first consumed sleeping pills in an attempt to end his life and then tried to hang himself near his house. When the police found him, he was in a drowsy state. He was rushed to KMC hospital, Manipal, and his condition is now stable.
About the reward for informers, he said it will shared by three or four persons who had coordinated with the police.

Udupi, Jun 28: Hariprasad, one of the three accused in the Manipal gang-rape case, was on Friday June 28 produced in district court.
He was remanded in police custody for five days.
Hariprasad was arrested on Thursday June 27, soon after the dramatic suicide attempt and subsequent arrest of the main accused Yogish.
Hariprasad, whose auto rickshaw was used in the crime, had reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation on Thursday.
Before being produced in the court, he was taken for medical examination at district government hospital in Ajjarkad.
The other two accused, Yogish and Anand, are still in hospital. Both of them attempted suicide on Thursday fearing arrest.
A 22-year-old student hailing from Kerala was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by the three men on the night of Thursday June 20. After a week of persistent efforts by 200 policemen spanning four districts, the accused were finally caught on Thursday June 27. The victim is recuperating in Manipal hospital.
