Mangalore, Jun 28: The police have succeeded in cracking the case of death of scrap merchant, Abdul Rashid from Kudroli, whose body was found at Tannir Bavi beach a few days back.
Rashid’s wife, Naseema (36), Mohammed Imran, who is stated to be her paramour, and Naseema’s younger sister’s husband, Saleem (38), have been arrested. Two other accused, Abdulla alias Kalia, and Mukri Siddique, are absconding.
The body of Rashid, who had been conducting his business near the Central Market in the city, was found lying at Tannir Bavi beach. Injuries found on Rashid’s body, and unlikely chances of Rashid deciding to commit suicide, had given rise to doubts about his unexpected death. The incident had given rise to speculations and immense interest among the people of the city.
Sub-inspector of Panambur police station, Bharathi, had registered a case, and begun investigation. Accompanied by other personnel, Bharathi had visited Rashid’s home and taken into custody Naseema and three others for questioning. After she found out during interrogation that Naseema had hired professional killers by paying a sum of one lac rupees, Bharathi arrested Naseema. It is said that the accused planned to eliminate Rashid, as he was the stumbling block in the smooth continuance of Naseema’s affair.
The fact that this case has been solved within a week, has brought to the fore the efficiency of Panambur police.
The accused had used an iron rod to hit Rashid on his head and kill him at around 1.30 am on June 21, before tossing his body into Gurpur river flowing nearby. It is gathered that Naseema, bothered at the fact that differences with her husband were becoming increasingly painful, had explained her problems to Saleem. Saleem, in order to help Naseema, planned to execute Rasheed in connivance with Imran. They then contacted Abdulla alias Kalia from Manjeshwar, and finalized the murder deal for one lac rupees. Naseema helped the killers by adding two sleeping pills to the food served to Rashid on June 20 night. When the killers came, she also opened the door of the house to facilitate them.
Rashid, it is said, had fought with his wife frequently, after learning that she had illicit relationship. He also had planned to take her along for Umrah pilgrimage for the atonement of her sins. He had also prepared necessary papers like passport, ticket etc. He had asked Naseema to be prepared to undertake Umrah pilgrimage on Tuesday June 25. But Naseema had other ideas.
After the murder, Naseema cleaned up the entire house, to ensure that no telltale marks of murder like blood stains are left out. During extensive search by the police and finger print experts, they found bloodstains in the cotton filling of the bed.
It is said that Abdulla alias Kalia has been a notorious person with several cases standing against him, including the robbery of train passengers near Manjeshwar.
Police commissioner, Manish Karbikar, deputy commissioners of police, M Mutturaya and D Dharmaiah, had guided the investigations. Assistant commissioner of police of Mangalore north sub-division had supervised the operations.
