Mangalore, Jan 16: Natyarani Shanthala awardee Jayalakshmi was accorded a public honour by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy in association with Tulu Utsav Samiti, Kasargod at the Academy Chavadi on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, she said that it was a tragedy that parents are organising rangapravesham of their children in unnecessarily grand manner spending thousands of rupees. It has become a question of prestige among the dance gurus also.
Jayalakshmi said that the dance teachers are encouraging this unwanted development through permitting early debut performances and vidwat examinations much before the student gains hold over the art.
Recalling the adverse comments she received when she dedicated herself to the dance field, she said, any woman if committed can achieve excellency in her field of interest despite the sarcastic words of the society. "Women can serve the art filed without going against the social system," she observed.
Writer Parvathi G Aithal, who was also honoured on the occasion was of the view that the regional differences developed by people in connection with languages will deter the linguistic growth.
Answering a question she said, translation is a unique literary form. It is not mere replacement of words of a different language. It requires creativity, critical thinking and individuality and added that she has perceived translation as a kind of service to literature in her mother-tongue.
Theatre artiste Geeta Suratkal delivered a lecture on Tulu theatre and women. Commending the contributions of women to Tulu theatre, she said, "The firm decisions taken by women to serve for the betterment of Tulu theatre about four decades back are really applaudable. This is because they had ventured on such critical steps when theatre was viewed from an ignoble outlook."
