Udupi, Jun 24: In a major development, the police on Monday June 24 released the sketch of one of the three persons accused in the Manipal gang-rape case.
The sketch was prepared based on the descriptions given by the victim who is in hospital, and was also confirmed by her.
Addressing a press meet here, IGP (western range) Pratap Reddy said that the police could not interact with the girl directly due to her health condition and it was done through the doctors and medical attendents, and hence the process was delayed. For the same reason, the investigation too is not moving as fast as expected, he added.
As many as 200 policemen are working on the case, and so far 17 persons have been questioned, he said, adding that the police are in the process of shortlisting the suspects and auto rickshaws were being isolated one by one.
The case has been filed under section 376 D (abduction and rape). The police are waiting for the girl to recover before questioning her directly, he said.
The three accused talked to the girl in Hindi, and interacted among themselves in a language not known to the girl, which may be Tulu, the IGP said.
A 22-year-old medical student of Manipal University was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by three men on the night of Thursday June 20. The culprits are still at large, while the girl is recuperating in hospital. The sketches of the other two accused are expected to be released in another press meet soon, he said.
Udupi SP Dr Boralingaiah and Dakshina Kannada SP Abhishek Goyal were present.
