Kundapur, Jun 22: Thieves who entered a house located on the road behind fish market at Gangolli here struck it rich. They could lay their hands on 24 sovereigns of gold worth around Rs 5 lac and Rs 2,500 in cash.
The theft occurred at the house of Naqeeb from Gangolli, who works in Dubai.
Seven persons including Naqeeb’s mother, Ayesha, his sisters, and their children, used to live in the house. Naqeeb’s wife, Hameeda Manna, also lived there. Hameeda was reportedly on a visit to her parental home in Udupi that day.
At around 12.30 am that night, the thieves gained entry into the house by burning a portion of the rear door and opening the bolt thereof. It was seen that the thieves had opened almirahs located in three rooms and ransacked them, in their search for valuables. That day, four family members were at home, and they were sleeping in the room located to the east. The thieves crossed that room, reached the room on the western side, opened its door, and stole eight bangles weighing around 16 sovereigns, two necklaces weighting about five sovereigns, and two rings. They also pocketed Rs 2,500 kept in a cupboard.
During investigation, the policemen found that the thieves had burnt the door around the bolt of the eastern door to get into the house. Clothes and other things were found scattered in the rooms through which they passed. They also took away two cell phones kept near a person sleeping inside the house. The cell phones were found to have been tossed outside the house.
The theft, which occurred in spite of the fact that there were people inside the house, and that the house in question is in a thickly populated area, has given rise to a sense of fear and anxiety among the people of Gangolli.
Finger print experts and sniffer dogs surveyed the spot. Gangolli police station house officer, Sampat Kumar, and other staff, along with gram panchayat members, Durgaraj and Raghavendra Pai, visited the spot. A case was registered, and investigation was taken up.
