With reports of huge discharges from upstream barrages, authorities in Agra have cautioned people living along the Yamuna banks to shift to safer places.
A 24-hour emergency office has started functioning, and the irrigation department has been asked to monitor the water level in the river.
Uttar Pradesh irrigation department officials said the Yamuna level in Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan could touch the danger mark in a few days as more than 800,000 cusecs of water had been released from Hathini Kund.
The highest discharge from Hathini Kund was in 1978 when around 7.5 lakh cusecs was released on a single day. In 2010 it was seven lakhs.
