`Crimes against women in Goa a perplexing problem'

Panaji, Jun 18 (IANS): Goa Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo Tuesday said he was "extremely concerned" over a spate of crimes against women and minor girls here and has asked the state government to find a solution to the "perplexing problem".

Wanchoo was speaking at a public function organized to felicitate freedom fighters on occasion of Goa Revolution day.

"While the overall law and order situation in the state remains satisfactory, I am extremely concerned about the increasing number of crimes taking place in this otherwise peaceful state, particularly, against our women and the girl child," Wanchoo said, even as police station across the state have been reporting a spurt of sex crimes against women and minor children.

"We need to find a stable solution to this perplexing problem, sooner rather than later. Social evils like this tend to create fear and insecurity among the people and particularly our women folk," he said, adding that crimes against women were tarnishing the fair image of Goa.
