- Sixteen Children Injured - Six Sustain Serious Injuries
Karkala, Jan 11: A school teacher was killed in a tempo - bus collision on Kudremukh Ghat on the Karkala - Kudremukh National Highway 13 on Wednesday January 11 morning.
The deceased has been identified as Prasad Math, a teacher in the Karoda Primary School, Byadagi in Haveri district. He had accompanied his school children on a picnic. The picnic group was travelling towards Dharmasthala after visiting Shri Annapurneshwari Temple at Horanadu. They were travelling in two separate tempos.
As the tempos were coming down on the Ghat, the brakes of one of the tempos failed and it rammed into the other tempo. As a result both the tempos went and collided with the Nishmitha Travels bus, which was on its way to Horanadu from Karkala via Kudremukh. Prasad Math, the head master of the school was sitting the front seat and died on the spot owing to serious injuries.
Other than the spot death of Prasad Math, 16 children have been injured in the accidents. Among them 6 are in serious condition and are admitted to KMC hospital at Manipal and Wenlock Hospital at Mangalore. Rest of the injured are being treated at Spandana Hospital.
A total of 60 children and 5 teachers were on the tempos. The impact of the head-on collision was such that both the tempos have been extensively damaged.
