Mangalore, Jun 14: Nikhil Prakash Shetty (41), an aide of underworld dons Ravi Poojary and Bannaje Raja, has been arrested and brought to the city from Dubai by Mangalore police with the help of Interpol.
Addressing a press meet here on Friday June 14, police commissioner Manish Karbikar said that Nikhil Shetty is involved in several cases of murder, thefts, supply of weapons, conspiracy, blackmail and other criminal cases in Mangalore and Bangalore.
He was involved in the theft that took place at Chemmannur Jewellers at Bangalore in 2007, but could not be caught. It was also learnt that Nikhil Shetty had conspired and supplied weapons in the murder of Vamanjoor rowdy Rohi alias Rohidas Shetty. However, it was not known where he had been hiding.
In 2012, Mangalore crime banch police gathered information that Nikhil Shetty had taken refuge in Dubai under the name of Nishith Shetty. He had obtained passport from Bangalore by providing false information.
The Mangalore police also collected information about his Dubai sponsor's name, address, mobile number and on July 5, 2012, issued a red-corner notice against him through Interpol. The information gathered about Nikhil was given to Interpol in Dubai.
Based on this information, the Interpol in Dubai took Nikhil into custody on February 2 this year and sent his extradition file to India. The file was submitted to the UAE authorities for his extradition in the murder case of Rohidas. On Thursday June 13, he was brought to Delhi international airport from Dubai. At the same time, Mangalore CCB police left for Delhi and arrested him on Friday night, and brought him to the city. The police hope to elicit more information on the underworld activities from Nikhil.
Apart from Rohidas murder case, Nikhil is wanted in the attack against Souza Electronics partner Richard Pinto, illegal transportation of weapons in Vittal and other cases.
