Mangalore, Jun 12: “In the contemporary scenario, a headmaster plays a vital role in the institution and even he has to face many challenges. It may be from parents of students, the educational department, public, and even from the media. The headmaster is like a sounding board. Hence, it is the duty of the teacher to cope with all problems and establish good rapport in society,” said Fr Alwyn Serrao, principal, Rosario College.
He spoke after inaugurating the educational conference and honoring ceremony for merit students of SSLC-2013 and heads of institutions with cent percent results, organized by Mangalore City High School Headmasters’ and Pre-university College Principals’ Association at Rosario Cultural Hall on Wednesday June 12.
Throwing light on the responsibility of teachers, Fr Serrao said, “A teacher should be a good example to students; he should inspire the students through his words and actions. Teaching, setting an example, and inspiring students should be the mission of a perfect teacher.”
Commenting on the education system, Serrao said, “The present education system is like the banking system. Earlier, the society emphasized only on IQ but now it has given way to EQ (emotional quotient), SQ (spiritual quotient), and SQ (social quotient). Even skills, behavior, and values are very important to the individual.”
On this occasion, outgoing principal of Cascia High School Fr Lawerence D’ Souza was felicitated.
After receiving the felicitation, Fr D’ Souza, in his address, lauding the district’s teachers said, “The education system and teaching methodology in Dakshina Kannada is really good when compared to other parts of the state. It is the duty of students to fullfil their parents’ dream. Though the individual has good IQ, EQ, and SQ the world demands marks and MQ(money quotient). Hence, for transformation in Dakshina Kannada, a bold decision is required.”
Moses Jayashekar, Deputy Director for Public Instruction, in his presiding address, said, “The headmaster in a school plays an essential role in the development of the school as well as its students. In the previous year, the district may have lost in the SSLC results but it is not the end. Even our district has achieved in sports and talent shows. Schools have to create awareness about dengue amongst children and they will communicate to their parents. In this way, awareness is created in society.”
On this occasion, merit students who have scored the highest in SSLC exam from various schools were honoured.
Retired heads of various schools were felicitated. Mangalore City High School Headmasters’ Association president Aloysius D’ Souza was present on the occasion.
