'JD-U to soon end alliance with BJP over Modi'

Patna, June 12 (IANS) : Bihar's ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) seems to have made up its mind to end its 17-year-old alliance with the BJP over the rise of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and a formal announcement is expected soon, party leaders indicated Wednesday.

"Only a formal announcement is to made for snapping the ties with the BJP," said a senior JD-U leader, considered close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who virtually controls the party.

"Till late yesterday (Tuesday) night, a number of party leaders, including ministers, held discussions with Nitish Kumar at his official residence, 1 Anne Marg, and it was decided to formally announce the end of ties with BJP in next two to three days," said a leader who did not want to be identified.

After deliberating with the party leaders, Nitish Kumar had asked all legislators to reach Patna by Saturday.

Another party leader said that JD-U president Sharad Yadav is set to arrive here by Thursday for consultations with the party leaders before a formal decision is made public.
Senior JD-U leader and Bihar minister Shayam Razak told IANS here that his party is discussing the issue in view of developments at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) meet in Goa and later in Delhi.

He was referring to the prominent role given to Modi for the 2014 polls and BJP veteran L.K. Advani's decision to resign from his all party posts, but later bowing to pressure from the party to continue.

"What happened in recent days was unfortunate and painful for the NDA (National Democratic Alliance)," said Razak.

Another JD-U leader and state Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary told media persons here Wednesday that top leaders of the party will deliberate here before taking a final decision, but his ministerial colleague, Narendra Singh was more definite, asserting Modi was not acceptable to his party as the NDA's prime ministerial candidate.

"Narendra Modi to lead NDA in 2014 general elections is not acceptable to JD-U. We are against being part of NDA under his leadership," Narendra Singh, the state agricultural minister, told media persons here.

He said Modi is not only controversial but tainted by his involvement in 2002 Gujarat riots, and said Advani was more preferrable.
JD-U leaders revealed Nitish Kumar was upset in view of Modi's increasing clout and the likely end of Advani era in the BJP.

"Nitish Kumar is unhappy with BJP leaders propagating that Modi, widely perceived to the party's prime ministerial candidate, could not be sacrificed for the sake of the alliance," said a JD-U leader.
The JD-U leaders asserted that there was no threat to the Nitish Kumar government even if it ends alliance with the BJP as it had the numbers to overcome any crisis.

The party needs the support of 122 legislators in a house of 243 to remain in power.
"The JD-U already has 119 legislators and it would need the support of only three legislators. Most of the six Independent legislators are supporting the party and will extend support to carry on the government," said a party leader.

The BJP has 91 legislators, the Rashtriya Janata Dal 22, Congress four and the Lok Janshakti Party and the Communist Party of India one each.

Sandy Sir, Federal Front is interesting but does not look alike a viable option. Mamata and Karat can not be together, Paswan/Lalu and Nitish can not be together, Mulayam & Maya can not be together. Jaya has shown some inclination towards NDA. If JDU comes out of NDA then it is a loss for both JDU and BJP. For BJP it will be short term loss whereas for JDU it will be long term. Lalu will gain from Nitish Loss. One thing is certain, BJP will remain in Indian politics (to the displeasure of many here) it may not come to power on its own. BJP and Congress will remain in Indian polity. A time will come when people will get fed up with the arm twisting of few regional parties. Think of a situation, if likes of mulayam, maya, jaya, nitish, lalu, mamata, naidu were to become (GOD FORBID) prime ministers of India, would they have come out of their regional feelings? I doubt. At least in BJP and Congress one may not do like that because of the party's presence in more than one state. We know the favoritism done by Lalu / mamata when they were railway ministers. can you expect anything better?

Valerian, we saw only one sided picture..Congress did'nt let us to know the other side of the story..MODI is the only CM who interogated by SIT created by Supreme court & SIT d that MODI has no hand in this incident..Now,if you are not agreeing for this then you have no faith in supreme court..Remember SIT constituted during UPA & verdict also came during UPA..Marginalising MODI just by propoganda politics not good for politics & india..Day will come when each & everything run on propoganda & conspiracy theories..Just look at our neighbours Pak, Bangla which is burning every day..If one section of society hates him for some reason, then it does'nt mean every one has to hate without knowing the truth..Sikhs die hard hate Gandhi family for certain reason, do you follow the same??..Truth is that its a chain reaction for the train burnt incident which unfortunately gone out of control..It is similar to Delhi, Assam incidents, still would'nt you love to see Rahul becoming PM one day??..Riots you can not control anywhere, look at recent incidents at so called civilised countries also..Communal will be far better than fake secularism since, you can easily recognise a communal but you can not recognise dangerous communal inside a fake secular who is a opportunist..

    Ramesh S,

Agreed, but for the courts to punish or hold someone guilty, they need witness or proof!
    Courts can not be wrong!
    They have certain parameters!
In all riots, masterminds could not be booked for lack of evidence.
But people can exercise their conscious and vote!
Tolerating wrong doing is in a way encouragement!

So Valerian Sir, why then the verdict of people of Gujarat should not be respected. If Modi is bad then he would not have been voted for the third time. If Modi is anti-people then why a certain minority community in spite of being in a majority in that town voted 100% in favour of BJP candidates? Nowadays nobody votes because they FEAR somebody. When some minority community people came in support of Modi's development plans (not in support of his alleged action / inaction of 2002) the so called secularists ‘BARK’ed them away. These so called secularists never give a chance for reconciliation. They are happy perpetually digging the old wounds over and over again. Even if Modi did a mistake (of not being able to control the riots) why people today should think that he will do the same thing again if he comes to power in 2014? If it was so then it would have happened in Gujarat already.
OK, many people say Modi is not important. In that case, why hundreds of people (in this forum) are BEHIND him making him automatically AHEAD of all? If he is not important then simply IGNORE him. Do not comment on him at all. Think about it, for every abusive comment, chances are that it will create two new supporters for Modi from the silent majority community who otherwise would have remained neutral.
Modi may not be the all time best leader. But currently, he IS the most popular leader. If it was American system of elections, Modi would have been the winner by now already.

Verdict of Gujarat definitely appreciated, therefore he is C.M. there many times!
If he is good to them, not necessary to all!
But Definitely NO one should use foul language!
But everyone has the right to their opinion and voice concern over certain issues, which actually helps Mr. Modi to understand all the people and correct himself wherever he can. Are you not aware Shri. A.B. Vajapayee is liked by so many if not all?

As a sales manager, i have criss-crossed India many a times. An average Gujarati even in the days before Modi was said to be thrice as wealthier than an average Indian.

Those of us who have travelled extensively in Gujarat can vouch that there has been tremendous development, especially in infrastructure under Modi. Large parts of central and eastern Gujarat is virtually unrecognizable compared to how it was back in the 90s.Modi has created an environment which is business friendly, and this inturn has reduced unemployment and raised the quality of living.

It is a tough choice for NDA. Out of the potential candidates he is the only proven candidate, Nitish probably comes a distant second, but Bihar even under Nitish is a century behind Gujarat.

Your assessment of Gujarat is so incomplete and skewed. A good national leader is judged not only by 'development' standards. Social equality/justice are extremely important parameters too in which Modi is pathetically way,way behind. Ignoring these social factors by Modi and his supporters can only be detrimental to the nation. If riots have not happened in Gujarat since 2002 it is simply because the ones responsible for tacitly supporting the riots are in power and keeping the minorities living under constant fear.
Modi is a divisive personality within the BJP, within the NDA and within the country. His popularity is only among the urban middle class (excluding a large population of the minorities),the big corporates, communal minded people and of course, most of the Gujaratis. Now to boost his popularity further he has hired 'APCO' a reputed American company for his PR propaganda using a lot of false information about 'development etc.' which is why he has been annointed with the label of 'FEKU' by people opposed to him.
BJP traditionally is a party dominated only by 'upper class' Hindus and many North Indian Brahmins so thats why they are finding it difficult to come to power in India and out of desperation they have turned to a communally tainted person called Narendra Modi to help them.

Nitish Kumar should have had this great enlightenment about BJP before he forged aliance with it. He should remember that Advani's rath was stopped in Bihar by Lalu. So why Nitish went against Lalu? What Modi is today, Advani was in 90s. A Hindu hardliner that is.
Nitish is going in the vote bank politics way, appeasing muslims, and conviniently forgetting that he came to power with BJP support.
There is no point in making aliances with Nitish. BJP should go alone in Bihar.

Federal Front (F.F) is most likely this time, since Modi is elevated!
    1. People are not happy with UPA for corruption & Price rise!
    2. NDA can retain 1 or 2 allies at the most if F.F. is formed others will desert in favour of F.F!
    3. BJP not likely to get many seats for they are communal & corrupt as well!
Mr. Modi of Gujarat is not a mass leader he lacks national appeal.
    4. F.F. most likely to stay united and choose a P.M. like MMS to share power for their survival as well of the nation for they have learned lesson from past mistake.

Modi was not fully responsible for Gujarat riot. It went out of control... its another isse, which happens in every riot. Just keep on comparing that one incident and forgetting the real transformation Modiji made in Gujarat is not logical. We must appreciate the efforts of a decision maker and a bold personality when it comes to national and international issues for sustained growth and national security.

It is first the nation, then comes religion, community, minority, majority etc., Modiji has thought of Gujarat's development first, and he will think of India's development next. Other things will just follow, as has been happening in past 60 years.

India currently is lacking leadership and if it continues, we will face heavy problems with all our neighbouring countries.. remember once the economic recession is over, all those countries will start hounding India, if our current political system (without responsibility and without accountability) continues this way.

Even if they are, they will start acting like Mamtha or Mulayam after the election when BJP comes to power. BJP should go with Modi as its caption no matter who wants to align with it. Only Modi can win BJP not these pseudo secularism preaching parties who themselves survive at helm of vote bank chunks.
