Mumbai, Jun 10 : Season’s first heavy monsoon showers paralysed the financial capital of India on Monday morning, exposing false claims made by Shiv Sena led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) of keeping the city ready for monsoon.

The Colaba meteorological centre in the city recorded 90.4 mm rainfall in last 24 hours, while the Santacruz centre in the suburban Mumbai recorded 181.1 mm rainfall in the same period.

While the lifeline of Mumbai, local trains crawled throughout the Monday morning during the rush hour, heavy rains resulted in flooding at 84 different parts in Mumbai. Major flooding happened at the Hindmata, Parel Junction, Lalbaugh Junction. Apart from these spots, Mumbai experienced flooding at ES Patanwala Road near Byculla and Dadoji Konddev Road near Byculla zoo for the first time.

Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte in a press conference held in the BMC headquarters on Monday evening accepted that it was manmade disaster and the civic body will be investigating the matter. “We will carry out a detailed inquiry and action will be taken against the guilty contractors and officers,” he said.

The delayed work on Britannia pumping station, which was supposed to be completed by 2012, caused flooding at Hindmata to Byculla. “Before starting the work on the Britannia Pumping station the work of rehabilitation of the underground storm water drain was taken in hand. But the contractor has constructed five barriers for isolation of the storm water drain while the work was going on. These barriers were not demolished after the work completed and the storm water didn’t pass through the drain, that causes a flooding at Parel, Lalbaugh and Byculla,” said Mr. Kunte. Several routes of civic body run bus services were changed due to water logging.

On Monday Mr. Kunte ordered inquiry and take action against the contractor who forget to complete the work as per condition. “First we will take action against the contractor and then after inquiry will fix responsibility against civic officials who are responsible for the chaos,” he said.

The flooding in several parts of Mumbai took place despite the fact that there was no high tide at the time of rains. Mr. Kunte said that it is very difficult to give assurance that the city won’t be flooded again during monsoon, due to the geography of the city.

Thousands of office goers were stranded in different parts of the city as local trains moved at snail’s pace due to constant overpouring. Western and harbour railway were running 20 to 30 minutes late throughout the day, while Central railway was running late by more than half an hour. Air traffic was also affected on Monday morning and some planes were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes.

In the last 24 hours 25 trees collapse cases, 11 cases of house collapse were reported during the rains in Mumbai. No injuries have been reported.

It is indeed saddening that Mumbai is unable to face the shower which is very important for this ever growing metro. But why were the BMC sleeping during the pleasant days of non monsoon months November to May to rectify all that was not done during last monsoon. Instead of going on streets with protest the citizen should demand work to be in progress between nov to may every year to face the most needed rain and the water it brings in to fill our lakes !!! Wake up citizens !!

I partly agree!! It is each persons responsibility!! If people carelessly dump solid waste, plastic bottles/bags etc. this is bound to happen!! How much will the BMC clean!! Secondly, Mumbai is one of the most densely populated cities in the world with a population of more than 1.2crores crammed up in such a small area!!! In case of high tide coinciding with heavy rains there is zero chance for the water to get drained and hence the flooding!!

Hello DODDANNA, you are speaking worst than SANNANNA, 60% of the population
of the world stays at the mouth of the sea, you mean to say they should suffer like this. Doddanna this problem is there every year without fail. Authorities do not take action in advance and suddenly when rain pours they start blaming each other. Muncipality staff removes the sand and dirt from the nullah and stores there only, when the rain comes that dirt and sand goes back to the nullah causing floods, do not worry
mouth of the sea is doing agood job, it throws all the dirt to the sea. How are you DODDANNA?

Rightly said by Dodanna Damaskatte, BMC is helpless as Mumbai is nothing but literally built on the sea by filling and reclaiming from an archipelago of seven islands!! At anytime if it pours very heavily and there is concomitant high tide there is no way for the rainwater to drain ending in flooding!!

For that matter yesterday it rained nearly 8inches in Santacruz area. Such heavy downpour would have brought even a city like Mangluru to its knees!!

Flooding has its own thrills and joys and suspense for the otherwise endlessly tensed and busy Mumbaikars!! The Hindi song best sums up the common Mumbaikar: "Seene Mein Jalan Aankhon Mein Toofan Sa Kyon Hai,
Is Sheher Mein Har Shakhs Pareshan Sa Kyon Hai.......

Nothing is going to happen...!! If you reduce 'water' from one area..it's going to increase in other area..!! It's after all concept of Nature..!! In Monsoon people from Mumbai enjoying the best.. even within 'gushing of water'..!! For that reason mumbaikars..are called 'Zinda Dil'..!! When 3-4 year's ago during the month of July whole system paralysed..people stranded whereever they are in there workplace. Some people utilised 'freedom' which hardly obtain during there lifetime..!! 'Mithi River' is main concern of Mumbikars..!! It's good time to chill-out in any of 'Bars' nearby during such time...!!

    MUNICIPALITY CANNOT DO ANYTHING
BECAUSE MUMBAI IS BUILT AT THE MOUTH OF SEA

NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF DAINAGE YOU MAKE

IT IS JUST AT THE MOUTH OF THE SEA

WHEN SEA SWELLS AND RAIN WATER INCREASES..... NO ONE CAN HELP

    ONLY GOD CAN

Every single year same old story.when the monsoon season arrives there will be problems of water over logging, floods etc creating hazard and chaos for daily commuters. thus the municipal corporation ever thought of bringing out a creative idea to tackle this problem.
