Guj govt withholds decision on death penalty for ex-Minister

Ahmedabad, May 14 (PTI)  : Under attack from right wing forces, Gujarat government today kept on hold its decision to seek death penalty for former minister Maya Kodnani, Babu Bajrangi and eight others in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case.

The rethink comes after Chief Minister Narendra Modi government came under criticism from right wing forces for its earlier decision to go ahead with the Supreme Court-appointed SIT's recommendation to seek death penalty for Kodnani, Bajrangi and others.

The state government had earlier given its consent to file an appeal in the High Court seeking death sentence for Kodnani, Bajrangi and others, who were awarded life term by a lower court.

"The decision has been withheld for now as we have to take opinion of state advocate general," Gujarat Finance Minister and spokesperson Nitish Patel told PTI.

"A final decision will be taken after advocate general give his opinion," Patel added.
Kodnani, who was earlier a minister in the Modi government, was sentenced to 28 years in prison by a Special Court in August 2012 in connection with the post-Godhra Naroda Patiya riot case - in which 96 people were killed.

Bajrang Dal activist Babu Bajrangi was sentenced to jail for his entire life, while eight others were given 31 years' jail term each in the same case.

Seeking death sentence for Maya Kodnani, Babu Bajrangi and 8 others was a political stunt by Modi to show he is secular and that too before the Karnataka Elections - and the election results turned in favour of congress.

So Modi is now saying 'soombe'.

If Modi seeks death sentence for these people and the court approves then it's like 'genji la ijji, genjig padna kai la ijji' :)))

and how can a Master seek death sentence for his students - if he does so - 'pol khul jayegi' and the poll result won't be in his favor. That's why Modi beela adig putting and kabbe japping. :))))

It is an open secret all over the world that with the aim of shielding the persons accused of heinous crimes in Gujarat he used all the tactics to cover-up the brutal slaughtering of innocent Gujaratis through ‘Operation Kill Muslim’. Hence, the world perceives Modi as a communal person in view of the fact that the 2002 riots in Gujarat took place under his patronage and it was because of this that several countries in Europe as well as the USA had refused to issue him visa.

    Mohammed Sadiq
What type of justice you are expecting in India. Last week I saw a small news that our Naval Boat had a accident with small fishing boat and 2 people died in that accident. The news was small and they might have settled with may be 2 lacs for dead people. Italian boat two fisher men killed in Kerala, we had lot of agitation, Indians made pressure on Indian Government to involve to punish those Italian people.
Rule is not same for all. It is differs as per your religion, Nationality etc.

This is what is called "part and parcel of Gujart Developement and Accomplishments of Modi.

Two days ago modi had so much to complain in US video conference and he will never admit that he is also human and makes same mistakes like other political party leaders.

We should remind him that first clean his own house, appoint a Lokayuktta and then start talk about Great Man PM Manmohna Singh who also had made few judegemental errors recently.

When Afzal Guru and Kasab were in Jail some BJP were in hurry to hang them. They were talking all type of Desh Bakti. Now when these criminal/Killers are in same punishment No body opens mouth. When Rahul Gandhi went to UP for election campaign and Congress did not get more seats, BJP targeted him that telling that wherever Rahul goes there Congress will loose. When Modi and Rahul visited Karnataka election. Congress won and BJP lost but they are not targeting Modi for the loss. Why double standard of Judgment and talk?

It is a matter of shame on our judicial system that could not bring these monsters to death until now.In these particular case 35 innocent kids, 32 women and 30 men were killed brutally for no crime. If any Indian who believe on his mother land India, then think above their religion and should demand for death penalty for such a heinous offence against humanity.

Its very much true but sad is that this Maya Kodnani and Babu bajrangi acted at the behest of their master Narendar Modi and RSS leader Mr Sudarshan. Sudarshan is dead now and died freeman. Now poor fellows Kodnani and Bajrangi are in jail until their death doing hard labour but their masters are free and moving in flights/helicopters and enjoying five star food. I am sure both these victims of major conspiracy must be repenting for their role in post godhra carnage and dead innocent peoples ghost may be haunting them in the prison. When can our politicians take lessons from their mistakes??

The punishment given by the lower court is almost equalent to death sentence.
3000 sikhs, only sikhs where killed in 1984. Nothing happenned, almost all roaming free for nearly years. Media/Congress please concentrate on this and try to give atleast 1 year jail sentence for all the culprits. Appoint SIT for 1984 riot case also. Dont ask parrot to do the investigation.
