Katju appeals for injured Pakistani prisoner's release

New Delhi, May 5 (IANS): Press Council of India chairman Markandeya Katju Sunday appealed to the central government to release injured Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay as a "humanitarian act".

"I appeal to the Indian government to forthwith send back Sanaullah, a Pakistani prisoner who was attacked in a Jammu jail and is said to be in a coma, to Pakistan, as requested by the Pakistan government. This will be a humanitarian act," Katju said on his blog.

He requested India and Pakistan governments to immediately set up committees to review cases of all prisoners in either country, and to set up mechanisms for early release of those convicted on alleged confessions or insufficient or suspicious evidence.

"Many such persons have been convicted on alleged confessions. Everyone knows how confessions are obtained in our countries (by third degree methods)," he added.

Ranjay, 52, was critically injured in Jammu's Kot Bhalwal Jail after being attacked by an Indian prisoner Friday, prompting Islamabad to demand his immediate release and repatriation.

He was flown from Jammu to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh for treatment and is said to be "critically ill".

The incident took place a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries sustained in a murderous assault on him in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

I fully agree with Justice Katju. this should have been happened at least 20 years back. Now both the countries should form a jt. commission and release all the prisoners forth with on humanitarian grounds. Mocking at justice Katju or at any other shows our weakness and that's exactly why we have not reached his status.

    Retd. Justice Katju!
Have you made appeal for Sarabjit?
You could not prevail over Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh!
Why do you recommend Indian government to release Pakistani injured Prisoner?
Off course, injuring Pakistani prisoner was not right.
We shouldn't think much of wrong people and follow them in action!
Then how are we different from wrong people?

I think Katju is overdoing this 'Mercy' and 'Humanitarian' thing.
Where was he when Sarabjit was on his death bed ? Why does he not ask Pakistan for humanitarian gestures ? He knows probably that Pakistan is a rogue state and cannot be trusted for anything.
Why does he not help to seek punishment for Sajjan Kumar via the courts and provide justice to the Sikh victims ? Why does he not seek justice for the 2002 Gujarat riots victims ?
There are better causes for him to take up.
Why is he so sympathetic towards convicted criminals ?
I think there is something seriously wrong with this guy.

If this injured Pakistani Prisoner is released now then Pakistanis themselves will kill him and then Say to the whole world that Indians had injured him so badly that he could not be saved.
This way inhuman Pakistanis will even go to the extent of killing their own Patriotic Citizen just to tarnish the image of India in the eyes of rest of the world.
So, this injured Prisoner should not be released but he should be given best of the treatment in India only. Our Medical Standard is far better than Pak, that is why so many rich Pakistanis now come for treatment to Bengaluru.
