Air India suspends pilot, two air hostesses

Mumbai, May 3 (PTI): An Air India pilot and two air hostesses were suspended after an airline probe found that the cabin crew overstayed in the cockpit on a Delhi-bound flight from Bangkok on April 12.

The action came amidst reports that while the pilot took a nap in the business class, the air hostesses were left to operate the aircraft for over 20 minutes, endangering the safety of 166 passengers on board.

The pilot had reportedly put the plane on auto-pilot mode and allowed the cabin crew to be in the cockpit.

Airline regulator DGCA has initiated a probe to ascertain whether the pilot had left the cockpit as suggested by the reports.

Air India admitted that the air hostesses had overstayed in the cockpit but denied that the pilot had allowed them to operate the aircraft.

"Based on a report that two cabin crew members were in the cockpit for a prolonged period on the said flight, the two cabin crew were called for an inquiry.  As the enquiry confirmed the overstay of the cabin crew in the cockpit, administrative action was taken against them and the pilot. They have been suspended pending the final enquiry of the incident," the national carrier said in a statement here.

Air India also denied that one of the cabin crew "accidentally switched off the auto-pilot mode", as alleged in the report.

"It is categorically stated that at no point of time the cockpit was left unattended by the cockpit crew. During the incident, due to distraction the co-pilot had touched the auto pilot disconnect button momentarily.  But the same was connected back," the statement said.

Asked about the incident, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said in Delhi that action has been taken against the pilot and the airhostesses.

"Any such incident in such a sensitive sector, safety is always a big concern .... these incidents are inquired into, so that you can learn from what not to do, how to change things, how to monitor things."

Really rediculous.I cannot understand that how the pilot can allow airhostess to take over the flying aircraft operation.Stringent action need to be taken for this lapse and serious corrective measures need to be initiated by the department to get back the confidence of the passengers.Thanq.

How did this incident come to the notice of the DGCA? Normally passengers are unaware what takes place between the crew and pilots.

The air hostesses might have been in the cockpit-prabably they are trained pilots who have not been able to become pilots. They probably were just watching out of curiosity.I am sure the complaints that the pilot was taking a nap is baseless and no sane person would leave the cockpit to have a nap. Moreover the co-pilot is also there .Let us await the enquiry instead of maligining the crew.

Why only suspension? Dismiss the pilot and the air hostesses he should never pilot another passenger aircraft in his lifetime for endangering the lives of other people. Some pilots go to sleep after putting the aircraft on an auto-pilot while on longer flights but they will not get outside the cockpit, and one pilot will be alert watching the flight.

When would us Indians stop taking things for granted and learn to be accountable and responsible? We heard about the pilots going off to sleep in DXB Mumbai flight a few years ago and yet it happens again. The guys not only be dismissed but also imprisoned for jeopardizing the lives of PAX

I can understand action against the pilot. But why against air hostesses? They were simply obeying the command of the captain.

Why an inquiry to confirm the incidence the cockpit mounted camera will tell the whole story. straight away kick the pilot off from his duty and let him take a nap for his life long further. Good the cabin crew had enough guts to sit on the pilot's seat.
