Iran urges dialogue over Syria conflict

Tehran, Apr 15 (IANS): Iran's Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi has called for dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition, Press TV reported.

In a meeting with visiting Omani parliament speaker al-Shura Khalid bin Hilal bin Nasir al-Mawaly, Salehi expressed Tehran's readiness to prepare the grounds for negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition groups, according to Xinhua.

Salehi reiterated Iran's position, saying that resorting to military measures will not help resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria.

He said that ending violence, dialogue between the government and the opposition, public vote and non-interference of foreign countries are necessary to end the Syrian unrest.

About 70,000 people have died in Syria since the start of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, according to UN estimates.
