Goa miners slam Santosh Hegde for Dawood comment

Panaji, Mar 25  (PTI): Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice (retd) Santosh Hegde drew flak from the Goa Mining People's Front for insinuating that illegal mining was akin to Underworld activities.

"We condemn the statement of Hegde equating us with Dawood Ibrahim. We are the workers who have been toiling on the mining leases to make our livelihood", Suhas Naik, Convener, Goa Mining People's Front (GMPF) told reporters here today.

GMPF represents the people affected by the closure of mining activity in the state. The Supreme Court had last year imposed an interim ban on mining in the coastal state.
During his interaction with media yesterday, Hegde had invoked Underworld to support his argument that those indulged in illegal mining business did not deserve any compensation.

"We can not ask illegalities to be perpetrated because some people are going to remain hungry...Frankly speaking (this is like) many people losing their jobs if Dawood Ibrahim were to be arrested", he had said.

Dismissing Hegde's observation, Naik said, "If he is treating us like Dawood Ibrahim then (it means) he did not want us in society".

GMPF, which had been holding the sit-in protest at Azad Maidan here for resumption of legal mining, today announced that it was withdrawing the agitation and will be launching it at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on April 15-16.

Mr. Hegde meant "under-ground" activities and not "under-world" activities.
    Dawood triggered Bombay blasts
    Miners trigger explosives every day.

The loss of green cover is something which cannot be explained in words or written on paper. It takes decades to form the top soil of a region which yields rich fruit in form of trees & plants for generations. There is an old Indian saying "We are living on the legacy of our children and have a duty to perform and preserve the Earth.
Also when we took birth we did see a lot of trees around and by the time we die,we should certainly leave more trees around us . "

Perhaps Justice Santosh Hegde had this in mind whilst commenting on the irreparable collosal damage done by mining activities both in Karnatkla & Goa over the past 3 to 4 decades.

Since Suhas Naik, Convener of Goa Mining People's Front (GMPF) is from Goa and Goa Mining business barons are associated with Ex-Congress Government in Goa, I think he will get more support from all corner of India. Had it happened in Bellary in support of Reddy Brothers, same people would have condemned him relentlessly. Santhosh Hegde has become famous figure in Karnataka for exposing BJP Leaders’ mining business but not of others. But the same person is not welcomed in Goa since he tried to apply same parameters for Congress Leaders mining business in Goa.

Justice Hegde has spoken the truth which is unpalatable to some. Infact the miners forum is a lobby promoted by the mining barons to apply pressure on Govt. Illegal mining has destroyed the states like Karnataka and minuscule Goa. Even in Karnataka there were protests on closure of Kudremukh But now everything is quiet.
