Kerry meets Palestinian president in Jordan

Ramallah, March 24 (IANS): US Secretary of State John Kerry has met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan, a media report said.

The meeting was part of America's renewed efforts to revive direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, Xinhua reported.

The meeting took place Saturday in Jordan's capital city Amman, where Abbas stopped on his way to Qatar, a Palestinian source said.

Kerry was in Amman with US President Barack Obama, who visited Israel and the Palestinian territories earlier this week.

Abbas and Kerry discussed ideas of the Obama administration on resuming the negotiations, which stopped in 2010 over a dispute on Jewish settlement activities in the West Bank.

They also talked about setting border and security issues as the starting point in talks with Israel.

Kerry was later scheduled to return to Israel to discuss with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu measures to restore confidence with the Palestinians.
