Colombo, Mar 15 (IANS): The Sri Lanka Army Friday said it was baffled by allegations against the military and vowed to battle the "malicious propaganda network".

Army Commander Lt Gen Jagath Jayasuriya said the military had been facing "unfounded allegations" since it crushed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009, reports Xinhua.

Since the end of the war against Tamil Tigers, interested parties were making a barrage of criticism against Sri Lankan troops, "based on a rash of unfounded allegations, malice and ulterior motives", he said.

"The vigorous unilateral allegations against the army, now made in Geneva, baffle all of us who decisively waged the humanitarian operations in Wanni at that stage," he said.

He said was the commander of the region where the LTTE leadership was wiped out.

He said neither he nor any security force commander or for that matter any division or brigade commander got a single complaint against the army.

"All these manifestations appear every year around the same time when the UN Human Rights Council gathers for their sessions in Geneva.

"It will be the practice, next year, too because the Tamil Tiger rump does not want to see a promising and prosperous Sri Lanka and they want to thrive on those allegations until they re-emerge," he said.

Sri Lankan troops have faced continuous criticism by sections of the international community, with rights activists calling for a probe into alleged war crimes.

Colombo has denied that its forces committed war crimes and has strongly opposed any international investigation.
