Udupi, Mar 11: Jubilant Congress workers painted the town in colours of the party in celebration of their win in the urban local body elections on Monday March 11.
President of Udupi block Congress committee Pramod Madhwaraj told media persons at Congress Bhavan that by winning by a majority of 22 seats, the Congress had registered a 'historic' win in Udupi CMC, after a dry spell of 45 years.
“Congress will aim at providing a corruption-free, transparent and people-friendly administration. Congress will do much more than what BJP did,” he assured.
During the previous election, BJP with 53.43% took 28 seats while Congress with 40.63 % took six seats. This time, Congress came back strongly bagging 22 seats with 51.33% of the votes; while BJP with 45.72 % took 12 seats and one seat went to independent.
CMC election results are an indication of what may be expected in the upcoming Udupi Assembly constituency, he added.
“A committee called manifesto implementation committee will be formed which will be guided by seniors from the party and from outside. We will try our best to fulfill the promises made in the manifesto. The people who lost will continue with Congress council. This was a free and fair election. We will provide door to door services. Once the selection of president and vice-president is done, immediately Congress will come to power. Government should call for the nomination of president at the earliest,” he said.
"We will rule without discrimination of caste and creed," he added.
