Mangalore, Mar 10: “With ever-growing quest for knowledge and greater precision in diagnostic modalities, the practitioners should give equal importance to clinical skills and not mere to technology," said Dr Nitin Shetty, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore.
He was addressing the gathering during ‘Eye-Tech’, CME on investigations in ophthalmology, a workshop organized by the department of ophthalmology, Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) under the aegis of Karnataka Ophthalmology Society (KOS) and South Kanara Ophthalmology Society (SKOC), at FMMC premises here on Sunday March 10.
“There is highly complex technical assistance available to diagnose diseases, however, the practitioner should not be its slave and lose touch with clinical skills,” Dr Nithin advised medical students.
"Technology should be used more efficiently. Use clinical methods to treat a patient. Arrive at a conclusion. Use technology for precise examination of the same disease. Find similarities and differences of results of both the tests. It is good to know technology but it should not surpass clinical methods," he said.
In his presidential address, Fr Patrick Rodgrigues, director of Father Muller Hospital said, “Patient care, education and research are important to treat any disease. Research enables one to tackle disease more efficiently. The workshop should focus on the importance of research to treat diseases."
Apart from using the equipment available to tackle diseases, Fr Patrick encouraged students to come out with one original research paper each year exploring new ideas to treat diseases.
