Owner of Kolkata's landmark Jewish bakery dead


Kolkata, Mar 8 (IANS): David Nahoum, owner of Nahoum and Sons, the 110-year-old landmark Jewish bakery in Kolkata, died here following cardiac arrest, sources said Friday.

The 86-year-old businessman, a well known member of the Jewish community, was admitted to the Fortis Hospital here Feb 19, and died Thursday.

"He was admitted to the hospital Feb 19 following some renal problems. He used to go there frequently for dialysis. He died following cardiac failure at 12.45 a.m. Thursday," an official of Nahoum and Sons said.

The prominent confectionery remained shut Thursday to mark his death. He was a bachelor.

With the death of David Nahoum, the Jews of Kolkata, a shrinking lot, lost an illustrious member of their community.

According to the official, the last rites were performed by his younger brother at the Jewish cemetery here Thursday afternoon.

"His younger brother was here from Israel since December to look after him. He will return to Israel in April," said the official.

Nahoum and Sons is renowned for its rich plum cake and tarts.
