United Nations, Mar 5 (IANS/RIA Novosti): Russia has called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) Tuesday to discuss the recent nuclear test conducted by North Korea.
The meeting has been called for by Russia's UN envoy Vitaly Churkin.
Russia, which is holding the rotating presidency in the UNSC, is expected to focus on a draft resolution which aims to broad sanctions against North Korean officials and organisations connected with Pyongyang's nuclear missile programme.
Churkin said earlier that the resolution was drafted by the US and the 15-member UNSC was likely to pass it.
The international community condemned North Korea Feb 12 after Pyongyang confirmed having conducted a third nuclear test, in defiance of UN resolutions and appeals from its neighbors.
