Bayern Munich eliminate Dortmund

Berlin, Feb 28 (IANS): German record champions Bayern Munich progressed into the German Cup football semi-finals after eliminating Dortmund, thanks to a sole goal by Arjen Robben, while Stuttgart routed Bochum 2-0.

Bayern Munich's negative run against Dortmund came to an end as they wrapped up the semifinals following a dominant performance against the titleholders, reports Xinhua.

Bayern began to control the proceedings as soon as the match started.

Bayern had the first chance to break the deadlock through Toni Kroos, who failed to tap in a deflected cross at the far post into the open goal.

The Bayern train started to roll as Javi Martinez tested Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller with a volley shot at the 36th minute.

Seven minutes later Weidenfeller was helpless as Arjen Robben utilized a turnover at the edge of the penalty box to curl home into the top left corner to break the deadlock.

Bayern Munich's dominance declined in the second half when Dortmund worked out promising opportunities through Ilkay Guendogan and Marco Reus.

Nonetheless, at the other end of the pitch, Dortmund had to thank their keeper Weidenfeller who denied scoring opportunities through Martinez, Dante and van Buyten in the closing period.

Thus Bayern took revenge after five losses and one draw lately to grab a berth at the German Cup semifinals.

"It was a very intense match with two top flight clubs but still we scored the winner. In a game on such a level, little things decide," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said.

Elsewhere, Stuttgart defeated second division side Bochum 2-0 to reach the last four. Christian Gentner cleared the way with his opener at the 18th minute and Vedad Ibisevic sealed the deal at the 81st minute.
