New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS): Terming the Hyderabad blasts a "massive failure" since prior information was available, the BJP Friday slammed the UPA government on its claim that it was committed to fighting terrorism, urging Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to follow it up with action.
"Show that you are committed to fight terrorism. Is the centre's role only to alert the states or help them stop acts of terror," Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said in the Lok Sabha after Shinde's statement.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said the central government had alerted Bangalore and Mumbai also and her party wanted to know what steps had been taken to secure the two cities.
She also sought to link the Hyderabad blasts with the hanging of Afzal Guru and asked why the government took nine years to execute the parliament attack convict.
The leader of opposition also sought to know if the blasts were linked to the inflammatory speeches made recently by the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leaders in Hyderabad.
Stating that the government and the opposition were not on the same page on handling terrorism, she said the two parties need to fight the menace jointly.
Earlier, initiating the discussion in the Lok Sabha on Thursday evening's twin blasts, Sushma Swaraj said the liability of the government increases as there was intelligence information available.
"The home minister says there was intelligence information that was passed on to states. If there were alerts and the attack was carried out and innocent people were killed... then there is a massive failure," she said.
"If intelligence was available on terror attacks then the liability of the government is more... what were the state and central governments doing," she asked.
According to the BJP leader, terrorists have no religion and the country must be united to fight terrorism.
"We must be united and accept that terrorists only follow the code of terrorism," she said.
