Melbourne, Feb 20: It was an evening of splendour for Melbourne Konkans who danced to glory at the Annual Dinner Dance presented by Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) Inc at Mossfiel Primary School Hall in Hoppers Crossing, Victoria.

The programme began on a musical note with the compere Stephen D’Souza welcoming the gathering with the Konkani song ‘Melbourne Konkan Kutam, Tumka Swagath Kartha,’ giving the impetus for the function to kick start. From then, the gathering of around 250 Konkans regaled on the dance floor to the music from the likes of rock n roll, country songs, reggae, folk, baila for nearly five hours swinging and curving, bending and twisting and jiving to the band AfterGlow that performed admirably delivering hits after hits. The Konkani super-hit numbers played by the band completed the beautiful performance.

Jawahar (Joe) Sequeira, in his presidential address outlined the tasks that could be completed by the community as a whole and explained the benefits one could derive by being a member of the MKC association. He applauded the success of Christmas Carol singing, Crib Competition, blood donation for a social cause and gave a brief description of upcoming events in 2013.

After the grace before meals by Fr Prakash Cutinha, parish priest of St Joseph’s parish, Northcote, the gathering settled for a sumptuous dinner catered by Vindaloo Palace based in Macleod.

The variety of spot prizes that went on throughout the function kept the gathering busy and added some extra flavour. During the event, prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners and participants of the Christmas Crib Competition held in December 2012.

Dolly Cutinho, Secretary of the association thanked the committee members for their untiring efforts in making the ‘dinner dance’ a grand success. She also thanked the Melbourne Konkans for coming and participating in large numbers. At the end, a lucky dip draw on entry tickets was conducted. Divya Prabhu of Carnegie and William D’Souza of Point Cook were the lucky winners.

The event was supported by Nikee Business Group, Schroeder Capital & Ash Financial Services and Philo Driving School.
