Margao, Feb 18: Writers, writing in different languages, have a common opinion to come together and fight against the increasing incidents of curbing freedom of expressions from the fanatic groups.

A symposium held on 'Expression: Freedom and Limitation' at the 21st All India Konkani Sahitya Sammelan expressed in one voice concern over the rising intolerance in Indian society towards free expression of a writer or an artist.

However, there was also unanimity that writer or artist should also act in a responsible manner, without taking undue advantage of the freedom of expression enshrined in the Constitution of India.

Musician and lyricist Saish Palondikar pointed out that the like-minded artist and writers' community does not come forward to support the person who breaks the unscientific customs or traditions.

"He suffers alone and we sit silently", he said, adding that we cannot expect the political class playing vote bank politics to support.

Melwyn Rodrigues, a poet from Mangalore, in fact said the writers are taking compromising position with the ruling politicians with an expectation of a reward or other facilities.

Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks said the artists should not forget the limitations of law of the land while enjoying the constitutional right of freedom of expression.

He also reminded the writers present at the symposium the constitutional provisions against misinformation, disinformation, one-sided information and non-information.

He recalled the incident where he had to face contempt of court for charging the court of taking a bribe without having an evidence for his statement when he wrote a column against the Aldeia de Goa case.

Citing several incidents like protest against Jose Pereira's paintings and Subodh Kerkar's paintings as well as restriction imposed in Jammu and Kashmir, English writer Vivek Menezes that India would be in trouble if no steps are taken to educate the society when situation is getting vitiated day by day.

Prabha Roy told the audience how musicians and composers faced severe restrictions and even burning down their instruments during Taliban regime and also in Turkey.

Young writer Hrishikesh Kadam observed that most important thing is our outlook towards the expression of the artist.

"Remember this society is taken ahead by visionary writers and the society has followed them much later", he said.
