Udupi, Feb 17: Social activist T G Abraham who had taken legal action against illegal mining in Bellary is now in the district to take similar recourse against illegal sand mining in Udupi.
Based on several complaints by the citizens of the district against illegal sand mining, T G Abraham on Saturday February 16 visited Kukkehalli where Koje soil is being removed and in Uppoor where illegal sand mining reportedly takes place. After investigating the place, he said that he was ready to take legal action against it.
Speaking to media persons, Abraham said, "Sand mining is rampant in the district and hence I have been called here. After RTI activist Vasudeva Adiga’s demise I had told Jayaprakash Hegde that I will be visiting the district to take legal action."
On the state of illegal mining in the district, he said the situation was similar to that in Bellary. "The mining work should be stopped at this stage itself for the safety of environment and we will solve it like in Bellary," said Abraham.
"Our fight is legal and we will bring a logical end to the problem," said the activist.
"The problem among some of the the activists is that they target only some people who are into illegal business, this should not happen and we should target all people irrespective of caste, creed, religion who are going against the law," he said.
"The illegal miners in the district are very strong, I do not understand why they are left free," said Abraham adding that the miners are backed by influential powers.
