Udupi/Mangalore, Feb 16: Robberies by wily men posing as police continue to baffle the real police. While four such incidents were reported in Bangalore about 10 days ago, and earlier in Kundapur too, Udupi and Mangalore too have not been spared. The modus operandi of the robbers has remained the same in all the cases in all these places, giving rise to suspicions that there may be a state-wide network operating with the gullible women as their targets.
On Friday February 16, three thieves posing themselves as police looted gold jewellery worth more than a lac belonging to a woman. The incident occured near the old taluk office in Udupi.
In this regard a case has been registered in Udupi city police station by B Rohini S Rao, who resides near Karavali hotel.
As per the information obtained, Rohini was waiting at a bus stop near New Dayana hotel at around 1.45 pm after attending a function at Govind Kalyana Mantap. An unknown person approached her and said that 'Ramesh' was waiting for her. When she approached Ramesh who was standing nearby, he claimed to be a policeman and even fooled her by showing an ID card. He warned that that were many theft cases in the area and asked her to remove all her gold and put it in her bag. However, Rohini refused to do so.
Another person (an accomplice) passing by their way was stopped by Ramesh and told to remove his gold. The person did as told, and believing the warning to be true, the woman removed all her gold and put it in her bag. The fake policeman also helped her and later the three unknown persons left the place on a bike.
Rohini suspected their intention on seeing them going on the same bike. She then checked her bag and realized that her gold ornaments, worth around Rs 1,10,000 were stolen.
In another case which took place at Gandhinagar school in Mangalore, a group of three thieves looted a chain from an elderly woman.
The woman identified as Lalita (73) was walking towards her house at around 11.30 am when three unknown persons came to her and said that there was a fight going on nearby and asked her to remove her gold and keep it in her bag. Believing their words, the elderly woman removed the chain and gave it to one of the persons who pretended to wrap it in a plastic bag and handed it over to her.
After a little while Lalita checked the plastic bag and realized that her chain was missing. The chain was weighing around 1 and a half sovereign.
A case has been registered in Barke police station.
