Mangalore: Raids on 15 shops selling ghutka, cigarettes near colleges

Mangalore, Feb 11: Continuing their efforts to make the city a safer place for youngsters following the suicide case of a young girl due to drug addiction last week, the MCC officials and the police on Monday February 11 raided several shops selling cigarettes, ghutka, tobacco and the like illegally.
The police swooped down on 15 shops near various educational institutions in the city.
As per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition on Advertising and Regulating Trade, Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003, selling cigarettes and tobacco products to persons below 18 years of age, and within 100 yards of educational institutions is prohibited.
Shops in the vicinity of Sharada Vidyalaya, Canara College, Besant College, Women's Polytechnic (Balmatta) and Gandhinagar school were raided.
As many as 300 packets of cigarettes and a gunny sack full of ghutka and other tobacco products were siezed by the officials.
Some of the shops were found to be running without licence. The shop owners were warned to volunteerily shut down or face action.
The raid operation was led by MCC health inspector Bharat Kumar, Yashwant Kulal, Babu Mallanawar, and Karunakar, accompanied by Kadri PSI Madan and others.
