Mangalore: Second foot overbridge opens at Central railway station

Mangalore, Feb 11: Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP inaugurated the second foot overbridge at Mangalore Central railway station here on Monday February 11 in the presence of Piyush Agarwal, divisional railway manager of Palakkad railway division and other railway officers.

The foot overbridge, measuring 3 meters in width, connects platform No 1 with platforms No 2 and 3 of the railway station. The bridge has a steel structure with concrete pathway. It is provided with non-slippery heavy duty ceramic tiles in steps and pathways. Its roof is covered with galvanized aluminium sheet (galvanium sheets). The foot overbridge has been constructed at a total cost of Rs 75 lac.

Addressing the media after the inauguration, Nalin Kumar Kateel said that the long-awaited demand of a foot overbridge has today been fulfilled. The Padil underpass construction project is under tender process, he said.

"The Mahakalipadpu underpass will be constructed with equal funding by the state government and the railway department. The Baikampady bridge widening has been granted permission by the technical department and soon the tender process will be started. Matters regarding the additional trains to Subrahmanya and Kerala-Goa trains have been discussed. The Palghat DRM has been very supportive to Mangalore," he added.

"There are four main points to be demanded in the next railway budget - Subrahmanya-Sullia-Manjeshwar railroad, for which survey has already been done; more Yeshwanthpur-Mangalore trains, more trains on Mangalore-Mumbai route and renovation of 12 railway crossings which are in danger, out of the total 27 railway crossings in the district," he added.

"A railway parliamentary team will visit Mangalore railway station in the coming days. The team will be headed by 12 MPs from different states," he said.

A cleanliness drive was also inaugurated on the occasion.

Piyush Agarwal said that the steps have been taken to ensure that proper cleanliness is maintained in railway stations. "Proper measures have been taken to ensure that the cleanliness is further mainitained in stations, trains and especially tracks as well. Jetski cleaning technology has been introduced on contract basis with Delhi-based firm Hughes and Hughes," he said.

DRUCC member Dennis D’Silva, PRO James, Railway officers Sarangapani, Shivadasan, Narayan P, Roy, Natarajan, Mohan and others were present.

They cannot speak Tulu or Kannada but it is ok with the Moral Police of Mangalore.The BD,RS,BJP,RSS and all other Armies are not interested in forcing the Department to hire locals for the Jobs.We have BJP in state and MCC but no job reservations for locals in Railway stations.

    Palghat Division covering mangalore central and terminus are the most corrupt stations of the division thanks to lethargy of the people.
    Why are there no trolleys, no porters and no proper ramps to go from one platform to the exit platform at Kankanady.
    Station master rudely told me to fend for myself even though he saw that I was a senior citiizen- you know what i had to do get the waiter at the IRCTC stall to move my baggage and he charged me just.... Rs 100/- per piece doing something that shocked me. He did not come with me over the overbridge but took my baggage across the railway lines to the correct platform and asked an urchin to look after it till I arrived. He then returned and dumped the baggage at the entrance of the compartment, demanded the money and scooted away. He did this with at least another 10/12 passengers for this same train so must be a rich man with the amount of trains that stop at this station.
    Mangalore central is no better the coolies are producing some paper issued by Southern railway Palghat division stating that for a trolley the charge is 120/- and for every piece of baggage it is 60/-. Well the trolley carried the baggage of at least 2/3 passengers at a time so see the ripoff with the connivance of the Southern Railway.
    Shame on them for treating passengers this way.

    Rs 75 lakhs for bridge= 25 lakhs actual cost 20 lakhs contractors pocket money=15 lakhs bribe to railway officer 10 lakhs to local political party in power(Mangalore) 5 lakhs for party in power in Palghat

    Have a CBI enquiry as to whether Rs 75 Lakhs was spent on this foot bridge. This estimate is crazy and very fishy and cannot be digested. The project does not seem more than Rs 15 Lakhs ( max ).

    It is unfortunate no thought was given to elderly people. It is very difficult to climb a bridge with luggage or a person on wheelchair. Hope concerned authorities consider constructing slopes connecting to the new bridge on all the platforms.

    While one appreciates the addition of infra-structure, a little more thought would have certainly helped.

    The bridge should have had provision for wheelchair movement and also luggage carts. This would have helped the aged, differently abled people and people with heavy luggage move from the platform to Entrance/Exit and vice versa.

    Isnt it time that the administration thinks about this across all public areas?

    good work.i would like to request authorities to explore the possibility of installing ticket vending machines for platform tickets within the platforms itself and stop issuing it at counters.This will reduce to some extent the rush at counters and people who want to see off passengers can take platform ticket in a relaxed way after seeing off passengers.

    I don't think it would have cost more than Rs 20-25 lakhs. Something is wrong and the estimate looks very fishy.

    A 10 pax elevator should have been erected on the platforms for the old & sick.

    Please build foot bridges for pedestrians and school children to cross National Highway 66 at several places. I saw school children being killed by reckless drivers while school children crossing the highway to catch buses. Let our public officials and politicians protect our school children. Check locations like Surethkal, Mulki, Uchila, Kapu, etc. See how dangerous they have become.

    I appreciate the Foot Over-bridge construction as it will help pedestrians to cross the bridge easily. The borders of the Foot Over-bridge will turn into Dark Red color within a short period of time. People who walk on that Over-bridge eat pan Beeda and spit either on the left or right side while walking. In Mumbai all the skywalk bridges are already painted red throughout on both sides with Pan Beeda spit even though there are notice boards alerting the passengers not to spit or not to throw beedi or cigarette smoked butt litter. How can anyone stop it.

    i personally feel that, at least a section of the bridge shud be put with a slope. most of the bags now a days have trolleys in them... it is easier to drag the bag rather than carry it.. youngsters can manage to carry the bag, but we must think of the aged... the trains sometimes come on platform 2, it is a nightmare that time...

    Mangalore MP,Mr Nalin Kumar for the formality sake never uttered any word addressing UPA govt for making available this SUVIDHA!!He is speaking about protocol in another occasion but we did not see any local MLA or local body reps in this function as protocol !! Mangalore/Udupi districts are one of the most neglected areas when see other states.We need rail network in and around DK/Udupi which should eventually need to join Bangalore-Mangalore-Mumbai and plus.
