Dubai, Feb 9 : Pleasant winter weather, sportive atmosphere, professionally organised event, and a complete, spirited activity-filled day marked a memorable 'Konkan Sports Meet 2013' on Friday February 8 at the stadium of Higher College of Technology, Dubai Al Ain Road.
Mangalore Konkans Dubai, a leading and vibrant Konkani community association, which is on the threshhold of a glorious silver jubilee celebration organised the event as the first of many announced for the year. Though the venue was away from the city, sports enthusiasts from all over the UAE started gathering right from as early as 9 am along with their supporters.
At 10 in the morning, a spectacular opening ceremony kicked-off the day, in the presence of participants, their supporters and many kids who welcomed the symbolic torch carried by national-level medal winning athlete Seema.
Ronald Colaco, NRE entrepreneur and philanthropist, who was the chief guest, received the torch. In his address Colaco appreciated the efforts of Mangalore Konkans which is hosting its 8th sports meet in a span of 24 years. "I appreciate the efforts put in by the president and members of Mangalore Konkans. They have sacrificed their valuable time, which they could have spent with their family and friends. But they are doing this work for the members of Konkani community. Let us not point out negatives, but appreciate them by highlighting positive points and thereby support them in carrying out such events in the future too," he said, wishing all the best to the participants.
Walter Nandalike, Fr Max Capuchin, Michale D'Souza, Ivan Fernandes and Joseph Mathias were the guests of honour. President James Mendoca and event co-ordinator Albert Rodrigues were present during the event. Albert Rodrigues administered the oath to all the athletes.
Roshan D'Silva, popular compere and member of Mangalore Konkans and Leela D'Souza were the comperes, who kept the the audience busy by providing complete information with announcements in Konkani and English.
There were a total of 49 track events, out of which, two were added - 100 meters track event for men and for women above 60. Both male and female categories were a big hit, with more than 50 participants in each.
According to the organizers there was also overwhelming response for tug-of-war and 8 teams were already formed as soon the meet opened.
The entire meet was full of fun, with more than 300 participants for the events. Most of them took part in three events, which was the highest limit. The event wound up at around 6 pm and the winning teams celebrated the ceremony with much joy and sportsmanship.
James Mendonca, president of Mangalore Konkans Dubai, expressed his gratitude to all the sponsors, well-wishers and the entire community for making this meet a fun and memorable day.
