Bangalore, Feb 9: Through an order that has come into effect from Saturday February 9 morning, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has hiked the prices of all types of milk and curds marketed by it, by four rupees a litre across the board. The people, who are already reeling under unprecedented price rise, have got another jolt in the form of milk price hike. ‘Samriddhi’ brand of milk, however, has gone up by only two rupees a litre.
The state government since long, had been putting off milk price hike proposed by KMF, and KMF chairman, Somashekhara Reddy, had threatened to affect the price rise unilaterally, in view of the losses suffered by KMF, increased expenses on the part of farmers, and price parity with neighbouring states.
A meeting of the board of directors of KMF held on Friday morning that was chaired by Reddy decided on the above hike. It is learnt that the government has given the go ahead to KMF orally.
It may be recalled that Karnataka government also distributes subsidy at the rate of two rupees per litre to dairy farmers. The last price hike was affected by KMF about a year ago. Consumers of dairy products in Dakshina Kannada, Bellary, Dharwad, Belgaum, Bijapur and Gulbarga districts, who were already paying a rupee per litre of KMF dairy products over and above the prices prevailing in other districts, will continue to do so.
