Illegal mobile SIM cards seized in Tripura


Agartala, Feb 7 (IANS): Over 1,100 illegal mobile SIM cards were seized and three people were arrested in northern Tripura ahead of next week's assembly polls, police said here Thursday.

"Over 200 mobile phone SIM cards were seized from a vehicle at Dharmanagar adjoining Assam in northern Tripura Wednesday night," a police official said.

"The driver of the vehicle and another passenger, a resident of southern Assam were arrested," he said.

In a different incident, 900 more illegal SIM cards -- procured using false or forged documents -- were also seized from a shop at Dharmanagar, the important commercial town of northern Tripura and 200 km north of here, Wednesday. The shop owner was arrested.

Police are probing the matter.

The election to to the 60-member Tripura assembly will be held Feb 14. Votes will be counted Feb 28.
