Mangalore, Feb 5: The police department, which hitherto used to give assurances without any effective follow up action thereafter with regard to drug peddling, woke up to the need for serious action after a girl student lost her life because of drug addiction.
On Monday February 4, the police raided several petty shops located within the vicinity of educational institutions in the city, and took into possession tobacco products like bidis and gutkha.
The raids were guided by deputy commissioner of police (city central), Kavita. Inspectors Manjunath Shetty attached to Bunder police station, Raghava Padil from Kadri, and Ramachandra Malegoudar (Urwa), apart from Barke police sub-inspector, Mohammed Shariff, led the surprise raids.
Sources said tobacco products were seized from these petty shops, as shops located near the schools and colleges are barred from dealing with them. Sources revealed that the items so seized accounted for two gunny bags.
In the meanwhile, student organizations too appear to have decided to act against the drug abuse. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad organized human chain on Monday at Basaveshwara Circle near Karnataka Polytechnic in the city, while National Students Union of India submitted a memorandum to the city commissioner of police, urging him to take steps to put an end to sale of drugs.
