Goa must check tourists harming environment: Pachauri

Panaji, Feb 4 (IANS): Goa has to enforce the rule of law especially to preserve its eco-system from the rapacious hordes of tourists who hit its shores by hundreds of thousands annually, Nobel prize winner R.K. Pachauri said Sunday.

Pachauri was speaking in the capital as part of a state sponsored lecture series.

"People come to Goa for short periods and they are looking for something in return. They are not concerned about the health of the environment or the regulations. Laws have to be enforced by which tourism does not become 'distortionary' in nature," said Pachauri, who heads the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Goa gets nearly 2.4 million tourists annually, who flock to its beaches and the mild winter sun.

Pachauri also cautioned Goa against becoming like Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla, which he said was on it way to becoming a slum.

"Goa has a bounty of an eco-system which has to be preserved," he said.

I am a foreigner and I stay in Goa for five months each year and take great care to dispose of my rubbish. It is NOT foreigners who I see every evening stopping and throwing rubbish of the Chapora river bridges, it is not foreigners dumping bags of rubbish outisde the waste disposal site at Mapusa, it is NOT foreigners I see in MH, KT, TN and UP BMW cars throwing empty whisky bottles through the windows into peoples gardens on a regular basis. Give the tourists rubbish receptacles as we have in UK,France,Russia, Italy, Spain,Portugal etc.. and we will WILLINGLY place our rubbish in these bins. DO NOT BLAME THE TOURISTS for your politicians pathetic failures.
