Mangalore, Jan 30: Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, exhorted parents to provide good quality value-based higher education to their children. He felt that this is the most precious gift they can ever give to their children.
He was addressing the gathering at the college day function of St Agnes College in the city held at the college premises on Tuesday January 29.
“Students who concentrate on innovation can contribute immensely to the growth of the country. Freedom to take decisions and follow beliefs, equality in rights, privileges and opportunities, and universal brotherhood, are three important things we need to imbibe in our lives."
He further added, "We should be proud of our country which has been taking giant strides of all-round progress. Yawning gap between haves and have nots should be narrowed down, and poor people should be enabled to improve their living condition. Effective steps should be taken to reverse the phenomenon of students opting out of schools at a young age,” he said. Murthy also dwelt upon the need to have quality teachers to elicit an interest among the students to pursue higher education.
Dean (administration) of the college, Marina Pinto, welcomed. College principal, Dr Prem D’Souza AC, placed the annual report before the gathering. Colourful cultural programmes including a Kannada play, ‘Ayke Nimmadu’, were staged on the occasion.
