Mangalore: Dowry harassment - mother-in-law gets four years in jail

Mangalore, Jan 25: The court sentenced a woman to four years in jail for harassing her daughter-in-law for dowry.
Shakeela Dastagir (52), a resident near Marnamikkatta has been sentenced to 4 years, 6 months in jail, together with a penalty of Rs 1.15 lac.
As per the information obtained, Yasmin had filed a complaint stating that her mother-in-law Shakeela and others had tortured her for dowry in 2006. She married Sirajuddin Sayyed in 2003.
Sources said that Sirajuddin’s family had placed a demand of Rs 3 lac cash and 100 sovereigns gold at the time of the wedding but Yasmin’s father could only afford 50 sovereigns. But after marriage, Yasmin was tortured and harrased by her husband, mother-in-law and other family members to get more gold from her parental house, stated Yasmin in her complaint.
Justice Chintha who led the hearing sentenced Shakeela to 4 years, 6 months jail term and imposed a penalty of Rs 1.15 lac. Yasmin’s husband and his brother were not present during the hearing as they are abroad.
