Mangalore, Jan 24: Eid Milad-un-Nabi which marks the birthday of Prophet Mohammed was celebrated with fervour by the Muslim community in the city on Thursday January 24.
Prayers were offered in various mosques where the faithful gathered in large numbers to meet and greet each other.
A procession too was carried out in the city, with people dressed in traditional attires marching along, accompanied by 'dafli' and music bands. Colourful banners and buntings added to the festivity.
The day marks both the birth and death of Prophet Mohammed, hence the celebrations are often low-key as compared to other major Muslim festivals. Many of the families choose not to celebrate the occasion.
The day is observed by conducting relgious and social service-oriented activities and discourses on the life and teachings of Prophet Mohammed. A message encouraging believers to follow the path of the Prophet reverberates across mosques.
