Who will punish this child-abuser?

Bangalore, Jan 21 : In some foriegn countries there are strict rules against beating or punishing children, be it by teachers, parents or anyone else. One may recall the sensational Norway case where an Indian couple from Andhra Pradesh was arrested and sentenced to jail for allegedly abusing their son.
But in India, beating children at home or even schools is common. In recent years, due to the impact of electronic media, cases of corporal punishment have come down in schools. But what about parents who beat children for petty reasons or sometimes, no reason at all?
A photographer with one of India's leading newspapers on Sunday January 20 captured horrific pictures of a father physically abusing his toddler in Egipura village of Bangalore.
The father of an 18-month-old baby boy, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, smashed the baby on to a metal sheet while his wife and other people watched aghast. It is said that the father was upset over the demolition of a shed by the BBMP. The BBMP had demolished about 100 sheds which were built illegally.
The unscrupulous father thrashed the child about mercilessly, and took all his anger on the innocent baby. The incident created outrage in the vicinity.
People watched on, but no action was taken against the father and no police complaint was filed.
Severe punishment must be imposed on such irresponsible and inhuman people, said a human rights activist who is in the process of collecting more evidence.
