Goa minister, law comm charged in arson case


Panaji, Jan 21 (IANS): A minister in the Goa government and chairman of the state law commission were Monday formally charged in an arson case involving railway property during an agitation in May last year.

Police submitted a chargesheet at the Quepem trial court against Minister for Sports Ramesh Tawadkar, Goa Law Commission Chairman Narendra Savoikar and several others.

They were booked for damaging railway property during an agitation by the United Tribals Alliance Association (UTAA) for implementation of tribal rights.

Two people were killed during the agitation, which took a violent turn at Balli village in Cuncolim, 40 km from here.
