Kundapur: Basrur goes green as agricultural fest attracts hundreds

Kundapur, Jan 21: A taluk-level agricultural festival was organized under the joint aegis of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, Kundapur Taluk and Agricultural Festival committee Basrur, 2013 at Sri Sharada College grounds, Basrur here on Sunday January 20
Speaking after inaugurating the event, K M Udupa, managing trustee of Bharathiya Vikas Trust Manipal said that agriculture has good future and support in our country and this can be shown only through events like these. "This programme has set an example for all," he said.
Charukirti Bhattaraka Swamiji of Jain Math, Moodbidri blessed the occasion.
In his address, the Swamiji said, "In these days of modernity, consciousness is depleting. One can overcome this darkness only by constantly remembering god."
He further added that one can depend on agriculture for self-reliance, and advised people to make less use of machines and give more stress to manpower. "With this, the problem of unemployment can be solved. Agriculture should be made mandatory at undergraduate level for two years at least," he said.
Special Attractions
Various cultural entertainment programmes by different troupes, exhibition-cum-sale of large and medium agriculture machinery, demonstration on cottage industry, sale-cum-exhibition of rabbit and various species of birds attracted visitors.
Animal Shows
Dog shows showcasing different breeds were exhibited during the festival, much to the delight of the visitors. Different breeds of dogs such as Neapolitan Mastiff, German Shepherd, Pug, Labrador among others were displayed.
In the livestock show, around 5 breeds of livestock and cattle participated.
Seminars
During the fest, various seminars on topics like sustainable dairy farming, family, women and youth in agriculture were held.
Thousands of people participated and took advantage of this agricultural festival, which took place after several years in the taluk.
B Appanna Heggde, president of agricultural festival welcomed the gathering, Chandravathi Shetty and Prathapchandra Shetty compered while Umesh Shetty delivered the vote of thanks.
Dugge Gowda, director of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development project, Udupi; Deepika Shetty, Kundapur taluk panchayat president; Sumathi Shankar Mendon, Basrur gram panchayat president; Sathish Heggde, Hemalatha Hegde, project officer Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development, Harish among others were present.
