Mangalore, Jan 21 : Quite often auto drivers of Mangalore have been in the news for wrong reasons, but at the same time, there are quite a few in the city who have earned wide appreciation for themselves and for their fellow auto drivers by exhibiting exemplary honesty.
The recent incident concerns 44-year-old auto driver Basavaraj, who hails from Badami and has been working as an auto driver in Mangalore for the past 25 years.
Basavaraj has shown great honesty by returning a gold bracelet worth Rs 50,000 belonging to Jacintha D'Silva, a resident of Pinto Lane.
Jacintha had hired an auto from Pinto Lane to Kadri, but while commuting she lost her gold bracelet in the auto. Later another passenger who noticed the bracelet brought the matter to the attention of Basavaraj.
Basavaraj came back to Pinto Lane and waited for long to meet Jacintha to return from Kadri. When she arrived, Basavaraj asked her a couple of questions on whether she had lost any bracelet. A surprised as well as relieved Jacintha gave him the required information, after which Basavaraj handed over the bracelet to her.
When we hear of thefts and robberies for gold happening every other day, gestures like Basavaraj's indeed come as fresh breath of air, and reaffirm one's faith in humanity. May his tribe increase.
