My husband should be hanged, demands rapist's wife

Shirdi, Jan 14, (PTI) : The wife of a serial offender, who allegedly raped and murdered a minor girl following release from jail after serving sentence in similar offences, says her husband should be "hanged for the heinous crime."

"My husband has committed a heinous crime and he should be punished as soon as possible. He should be hanged to death," said 28-year-old Sarika Salve, the wife of Sunil Suresh alias Pappu Salve (32) who was arrested two days ago for kidnapping, raping and then murdering a nine-year-old girl in Shirdi town of Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district on December 28 last year.

Salve has been remanded in police custody till January 17 in connection with the case.
"I am ashamed of my husband," the woman, who has two daughters herself, said yesterday.

"My husband used to beat me. Fed up with the violence, I attempted suicide sometime back by consuming poison and was admitted to a hospital for a long time. But, he (Salve) never turned up to meet me," she said.

"If required, I am ready to depose against him in court," she added.

Earlier, Salve was arrested in 2003 for raping and murdering a minor girl in Sinnar area of Nashik district.

Later, Nashik Sessions Court had awarded death sentence to him in the case. But he had appealed in the Bombay High Court against the sentence and was acquitted in the case, police sources had said.

However, he was serving two jail terms - ten-year and seven-year rigorous imprisonment each - for cases of rape and murder against him lodged in Ambad and Nashik police stations in 2002, police said.

On account of his good behaviour, he was released from the Nashik road jail on May 28, 2012.

After release from jail, Salve kidnapped the nine-year-old girl from Shirdi and allegedly raped and murdered her on December 28, 2012.

He then threw the victim's body at an isolated place near Shirdi railway station. The decomposed body was recovered on the night of January 11, police had earlier said.

Prisoners, regardless of their criminal records, when they are released from the jails need special surveilance, treatment and mentoring process. Most of these released prisoners come out of their cells after harsh treatment, and obcviously they are built with lot of internal stress and anxiety.

When the society looks upon the released convicts with suspicion and peculiar attitude, they are bound to get aroused with anger and temparament. It is a very delicate situation thru whichever angle you view the sad episode of life of an individual who comes to this real world and free to act in the way he feels appropriate. This is where the role of a society takes into shape, specially from the spouses and family surroundings. This is exactly where the "half-way homes", penitentiories and special mentoring incubators help the released inmates to recover from their mental and physical shocks of life.

Sad and strange as it might sound, countries such as India have a great deal to learn the consequences that will take place where laws can be interpreted in so many ways when population is going up, when affluence is rising, and more and more crimes will occur and the lack of police force will compound the daily disorder of life.

The society therefore is responsible to come up with appropriate measures whereby criminal victims get better treatment and better education. Few years ago we visited the State of Kerala where we witnessed some of the "borderless" prisons where life prevails with whatever circumstances availabnle. India therefore need to evaluate the consequences of a changing society and educate people both inside and outside the barbed wires in a way that will assist the good ones and also the "odd" ones.

This a lesson to Raj Thackrey and some readers here on DW. RT because he bellowed at the top of his voice that UP/Biharies are fit to be kept out because they rape. DW readers because they said Delhi is unsafe.

Just imagine how insecure this wife feels let alone any other girl/woman ! Do rapists belong to a specific geographical area or a state ruled by a particular govt ? No ! They are everywhere and a severe law is required to punish who commit this crime !

This man should be terminated from this world. He is dangerous to the society and good development is his wife ready to depose if asked to.Unless and until deterrent punishment not proscribed for the rape, the heinous crime will not under control.Law enforcing agency also must have will power to take them up to logical end in the court.
