Mangalore, Jan 5: An awareness programme condemning violence against women and discussions on tackling such crimes were held at St Agnes College auditorium on Saturday January 5.
A programme was also held to pay homage to the women who have been victims of various forms of violence, atrocities and injustice.
A protest rally was organized prior to the programme. Audio-visual presentation and dance portraying tragic incidents in the lives of women were the highlights of the programme. Through dialogues, debates and a karate demonstration, attempts were made to find solutions for the problems concerning women.
The main highlights of the programme was a panel discussion, with inputs given by advocate Asha Nayak, social activist Vidya Dinker, student council president Falen Lasrado, and others on legal rights and empowerment of women. Dr Geralyn Pinto, HOD, PG department of English, was as the moderator.
During the discussion, Asha Nayak said that criminals and rapists have been escaping punishment due to lack of evidence. In this regard, the victims need to take a strong stand and do everything possible to bring the perpertrators to justice.
"The girl victim should contact the nearest hospital immediately if she has been physically or sexually abused. She should also preserve the clothes she was wearing at the time of the incident, which can be produced as evidence in court. Above all, she should contact the nearest police station immediately," she said.
"Even though it may be difficult for the victim to describe in the court the trauma she has undergone, it is necessary that she explains. At the same time, the judge, prosecutor and lawyers should understand her position and not be prejudiced," she said.
Vidya Dinker said that though the country's judicial sytem is strong, the laws are not implemented properly. "Public awareness on laws and judicial system are essential to tackle crime in the country," she said.
Dr Devi Prabha said that women face many problems right from womb to tomb, that is, from birth to death. "The number of rapes and assaults on women has been increasing at an alarming rate and it is high time to rise and fight against such issues," she added.
