It may be recalled that the elephant, called Laxmisha, had gone wild and tried to attack the driver of the truck in which it was being transported. It could be calmed down only after fire brigade sprayed water on it.
It is said that later, another elephant 'Abhimanyu' was brought to pacify Laxmisha, and was taken back.
In the early hours of Thursday, Laxmisha was being taken to Padil from Darbe via Salamar when the incident took place at Kepulu at around 2 am.
Chandra was walking by the elephant's side, while another mahout, identified as Raviteja, was sitting on its back. All of a sudden, the elephant grabbed Chandra and flung him, which caused his death.
Raviteja jumped off the elephant and managed to escape. He came back after a few minutes and brought the elephant under control and tied it up, hence preventing further tragedy.
More details awaited.
