Sullia, Jan 2: Police have arrested Vasanth Sherigar (47) in connection with the double murder of a man and a woman that shocked the town on Saturday December 29 night. Vasant had been absconding ever since the incident.
Padmavati (38), wife of Harish Nayak of Naraje, and tractor driver Hitesh (30) were allegedly murdered by Vasanth using an axe at a hill near her house, where he reportedly found the victims in a compromising position.
The above details were revealed by Vasanth when police interrogated him. The motive behind the murder was adultery by the woman, he said.
As per the information received, Vasanth shared intimate relationship with Padmavathi but on Saturday when Vasanth proposed, she refused him and instead went away with Hitesh. This prompted Vasanth to kill them both, it is learnt.
Police sources said that Vasanth cleaned the axe which was used in the murder, dumped it in a store room and then fled the spot.
It is learnt that Harish and Padmavati were married for 15 years, and blessed with two sons. Elder son Ravishankar is in the 7th standard while the younger one Mahesh is in 4th standard.
The couple were in the process of building a new house near their existing one, and work on levelling the land was going on. A JCB earthmover had been brought for the purpose and on Saturday night the work began.
Harish told the police that he was aware of his wife's adulterous nature. Vasanth and Hitesh reportedly had affairs with her by developing friendship with Harish.
