Former Cricketer, Commentator Tony Greig Dies at 66

London, Dec 29 (IANS): Former Engand cricket captain Tony Greig died here Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He was 66.

"He was rushed into St Vincent's hospital. The staff of the emergency department worked on Mr Greig to no avail," St Vincent's spokesman David Faktor was quoted as saying by The Age.

Greig, a Channel Nine commentator, was suffering from lung cancer since October. The lung cancer was detected during Australia's one-day series against Pakistan in Dubai in August and September.

Greig was initially diagnosed with bronchitis in May. But his condition deteriorated and by the time the World Twenty20 finished in Sri Lanka in October, small lesions were detected at the base of his right lung. After he returned to Australia, Greig underwent treatment and fluid was removed from the right lung.

"Tony Greig is a name synonymous with Australian cricket - from his playing days as the English captain we loved to hate, to his senior role in the revolution of World Series Cricket...and more than three decades of colourful and expert commentary," a Channel Nine statement said.

A South African by birth, Greig qualified to play cricket for England because of his Scottish parents. As a teenager he trialed for Sussex in 1965. He played 58 Tests between 1972 and 1977.

He made his Test debut against Australia at Old Trafford in 1972 and struck half-centuries in both innings and taking five wickets for the game. He made his debut as a Test captain against Australia in 1975.

Greig became a controversial figure due to his close relationship with Australian businessman Kerry Packer. Greig was instrumental in recruiting players for the break away World Series Cricket that ended his international career.

Greig was a formidable Test all-rounder. He has scored 3,599 runs at an average of 40.43 including eight centuries, and 141 wickets at an average of 32.20, best being 8-86.

Many vivid and great memories of Tony Gregg in cricket. Tallest among all cricketers, a "useful" all-rounder to English cricket team. Tony Gregg was member of Tony Lewis' British team in 1972, which lost the 'Rubber' to India's Ajith Wadekar's team. He was member of British team which bowled out India for 42 runs, in the second innings of test match in 1974. Always has been a Gentleman in Gentleman's game. RIP Mr. Anthony Gregg.

One of the best commentator in cricket and best captain in 1970 to 1972 specially during the era of Indian Sunil Gavasar and Gundappa Viswanath whom Greg liked very much for their batting and cricket . Known for his character and when Tony Greg come to batt means all are very curious to see his talented charm and his gentleness. A talented cricketer is no more. May his soul rest in peace and God may give the courage to all his well wishers the courage to bear this great loss. He is known for the captaincy specially againt the Indians.

I have to recall two incidents which is very fresh in my mind related to Tony Greig.
    1. Photo of Tony Greig, holding Indian stylish batsman G.R.Vishwanth in his arms with both his hands like a kid when G.R.V scored a century against England.
2.His famous commentary quote if any batsman hits a six " This is what doctor advised him to do " Now all commentators are using his famous quote..
Dear Tony sir..YOU ARE IN OUR HEART ALWAYS...

Loved and watched him in England in the 70's and his great shot at standing 6 foot seven tall was to stand up right to the bouncer and flick the ball high over the wicketkeeper to the boundary for four or six. A well perefcted shot but I loved the way he went about life. Not content to be the norm, but be a bit contoversial and sa what he thought (true expression). He also spoke at a NZ sportsman of the year award and his speach was one of the funniest to enjoy. A great archived memory. Rest in peace !! You were a joy the cricketing world

    @John Tauro-
You are right about Greig's height. He was presented to our countrymen who were taller than him & not cricket players.
Joel Garner, Courtney Walsh & Curtley Ambrose were taller than Greig(I think), but they came later when Greig had retired from playing cricket.

I remember 40 years back when England cricket team visited India Tony was the tallest player in the team. He was given a surprise by presenting nearly 7'or more taller Indians who looked down on Greig. He tried their shoes & said oh.. these are as big as suitcase, as he was dwarfed by our countrymen.
We will miss him & his commentary 4 ever. Rest In Peace.
He was born in South Africa, represented England & resided in Australia, truly a Global Personality.

    SAD NEWS.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

WHY MOST OF THE CRICKETERS ARE NOT ABLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR HEALTH.

66 YEARS IS TOO EARLY TO DIE FOR A PERSON LIKE TONY GRIEG.

NOWADAYS MEDICAL SCIENCE IS NOT ALLOWING TO HUMAN TO DIE.

LONGEVITY IS INCREASING DUE TO MEDICAL TREATMENT.
