Mangalore, Dec 19: The much-needed blood bank at Lady Goschen hospital seems to have moved one step closer to realization with members for the district unit of Indian Red Cross Society being elected democratically for the first time in the history of DK district last week. This has rekindled hopes of setting up of a blood bank at Lady Goschen hospital soon.
The newly-elected chairperson of district unit of Indian Red Cross Society Dr Murali Mohan Choonthar told daijiworld that as per the norms of the Indian Red Cross Society, the blood bank has to be set up in a government hospital of any district. The current blood bank at Athena hospital will be shifted to Lady Goschen hospital after completion of mandatory transition procedures, he assured.
Treasurer Ravindranath K said that during the last two annual general meetings, shifting of blood bank from Athena hospital to Lady Goschen hospital was discussed and each of the executive committee members had prioritized the issue.
Sources told daijiworld that some years ago Athena hospital had got the blood bank set up in its premises as the hospital management had felt that there was enough free space. The source further added that one of the newly-elected executive committee members of the district unit of Indian Red Cross Society has a top post in Athena hospital.
Apart from setting up of blood bank at Lady Goschen hospital, the chairperson Dr Murali Mohan Choonthar said that awareness will be created on the importance of blood donation by staging street plays, taking out rally among others. Establishment of blood storage units in all the taluk centers of the district is also on the cards. Moreover, the district unit has 792 members at present and this will be increased to 3,000, he said. Currently, Kolar district unit of Indian Red Cross Society stands first with 3,000-plus members.
