UEFA Levies Heavy Ban on Serbia U-21 Team

London, Dec 14 (IANS): Two Serbian Under-21 team football coacheshave been banned for two years for their role in a post-match brawl in a European Championship qualifier, UEFA announced Thursday.

UEFA also fined the Serbian federation $105,000 and the Under-21 team will have to play a match behind closed doors, Xinhua reports.

The brawl began when England defender Danny Rose kicked a ball into the stands after the final whistle to protest that he had been racially abused by Serbian fans in the Oct 16 match where England won 1-0 to qualify for the Euro 2013 in June.

As a result, Serbia fitness coach Andreja Milunovic and assistant coach Predrag Katic each received two-year international ban.

Four Serbia players were given international bans: Goran Causic for four matches, Ognjen Mudrinski and Filip Malbasic for three matches and Nikola Ninkovic for two matches.

The two England players were also banned for improper conduct. They are defender Steven Caulker (two matches) and midfielder Thomas Ince (one match). The sanctions will take effect at the finals next June when England faces Italy, Norway and Israel in the group stage.
